gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 had a lot to show, but one announcement stood above the rest: Geralt is returning in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past. A full third expansion for one of the most celebrated RPGs ever made is a genuinely surprising way to close out the game’s story, and it anchors a show full of ambitious 2027 releases.
Here are the biggest reveals worth keeping on the radar.
1. The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is the show’s standout
Songs of the Past sends Geralt to Letten, a new realm that appears peaceful before its hidden problems surface. CD Projekt Red is developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory, including veterans of the original Witcher 3 team, and has positioned it as a full-fledged new adventure rather than a minor add-on.

2. Final Fantasy VII Revelation makes the finale feel huge
Square Enix’s new Final Fantasy VII Revelation trailer is all about the endgame: awakened Weapons, a planet in crisis, and the Highwind opening up the final leg of Cloud’s journey. The trilogy’s last chapter is due in Spring 2027 and will launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

3. METRO 2039 brings the series back to the tunnels
4A Games’ Renegade trailer gave the new METRO 2039 a clearer identity. The Stranger’s journey through Sevastopolskaya Station puts the series back in a pressured, political underground setting, while the new gameplay shows both surface survival and first-person stealth-action. METRO 2039 is planned for February 2027.

4. EXODUS locks in April 2027
After a long series of looks at its far-future setting, EXODUS finally received a firm release date: April 7, 2027. The trailer puts Jun Aslan and Salt, an Awakened octopus companion, front and centre, while the game’s time-dilation premise remains one of the most interesting hooks in the upcoming RPG slate.

5. CONTROL Resonant keeps its strange Manhattan momentum
Remedy’s Altered State trailer moves CONTROL Resonant closer to its September 24, 2026 launch. Dylan Faden is now the lead, Jesse is missing, and Manhattan has become a reality-bending battleground. It is a major shift in perspective for the series and one of the most immediate games shown at ONL.

6. ONTOS turns experiments into the real horror
Frictional Games used ONL to show the first gameplay of ONTOS, its upcoming sci-fi thriller from the creators of SOMA. The reveal focuses on a rodent-machine experiment where following instructions is only one option: players can look for another solution or sabotage the system and face the consequences.
That systems-driven approach gives ONTOS a different kind of tension from the other games on this list. Its moon-base setting, Samsara, is built around strange experiments, fractured reality, and questions that become less comfortable the deeper players go. The game is now planned for 2027.

The takeaway
The biggest story from gamescom ONL 2026 is not one surprise release date. It is the density of the 2027 calendar. Songs of the Past is the highlight because it returns to an already beloved world with a full-scale expansion, but it is joined by Final Fantasy VII Revelation, EXODUS, and METRO 2039 in a year that is quickly becoming crowded with major story-driven games.
This is an editorial selection based on official gamescom ONL trailers and publisher announcements available as of August 27, 2026. Release dates and details can change.
